Walt Dropo was a 6'5" first baseman known as "Moose" who had a 13-year Major League career, mostly in the American League. Displayed is a 1959 Walt Dropo Baltimore Orioles' all original game used jersey from the slugger's final stop in the Major Leagues. Dropo played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles (1959-61). Before playing professional baseball, Dropo was a 3-sport star at the University of Connecticut, and he was drafted by the Providence Steamrollers of the Professional Basketball Association of America and by the Chicago Bears, of the NFL. Dropo served three years in the United States Army during World War II, with combat in Europe, and his Major League career was delayed, with his rookie season in 1950, at age 27, with the Boston Red Sox. He had an amazing rookie campaign, becoming the AL Rookie of the Year and an All-Star. He batted .322, with 34 homers and an American League-leading 144 RBIs. In 1951, he broke his wrist, and while he played in the Major Leagues through 1961, he was never the same player as before the injury. In '59, Dropo played the first part of the season with Cincinnati. With the Orioles later that season, he played in 62 games and batted .278, with six home runs and 21 RBIs. The gray short-sleeved, away jersey has "Baltimore" across the chest, in sewn-on orange script with black trim. Under the team's name is 37 in sewn-on orange letters with black trim. On the left shoulder is the Oriole "bird" logo. A working zipper runs down the front. On back is 37 in sewn-on orange letters with black trim. A sewn-on gray tag in the neck reads, "59 [year], 37 [number] 48 [size]." On the lower left outside tail is a sewn-on Spalding manufacturer's" that has some loose threads. Adjacent to the manufacturer's tag is a sewn-on size 48 tag. The outside of the back neck seam is loose in an approx. 3-inch segment. The jersey exhibits a number of very small stains, and a larger, but fairly faint stain, on the front under the team name, but overall, the jersey is in nice condition.
