Howser was the New York Yankees' third base coach from 1969 to 1978, and after a brief stint as the head baseball coach at Florida State, he returned as Yankees manager for the 1980 season. Despite winning the division, the Yankees lost to the Kansas City Royals in the playoffs, which prompted team owner George Steinbrenner to fire Howser after just one season. The Yankees loss, however, was the Royals gain, as the club hired him during mid-season of 1981. In five full seasons with the Royals, Howser won three division titles and one World Championship before cancer took his life in 1987.
