Early on-site boxing poster promoting the ten-round welterweight fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Floyd Mayweather at the Providence Civic Center on Saturday, September 9, 1978. This was the fourteenth fight of Leonard's professional career and one of his most important. The poster pictures full-length images of each boxer, along with a listing of the bouts on the undercard, which includes the first professional fight for Sugar Ray Leonard's brother, Roger. The fight against Mayweather was Leonard's first against a ranked opponent, and its significance was summed up by the quote from his manager Angelo Dundee that appears in print along the top of the poster: "His First Big Test." Mayweather, who is the father and trainer of legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., entered the bout ranked #17 in the welterweight division. The step up in class did not seem to bother Leonard, as the broke Mayweather's jaw and won the fight by TKO in the tenth round. Some 14 months later, Leonard won both the WBC and Ring Welterweight titles and the rest, as they say, is history. The cardboard poster (14x22") displays light water staining along the top border and light rippling, neither of which detract from its overall Excellent appearance.
