Presented is a May 24, 1935, Cincinnati Reds' ticket stub from Crosley Field in Cincinnati, the site of the Major Leagues' first night game. Games had been played under the lights in the minor leagues, and the Negro Leagues and barnstorming teams had been using portable lights for years, but until the Reds hosted the Philadelphia Phillies on a Friday night, Major League baseball had always been played in daylight. The attendance was 20,422, and the Reds' starter was Paul Derringer. The right-hander went the distance, allowing only six hits and a run in the Reds' 2-1 victory. The Reds scored a run in the bottom of the first against the Phillies' starter, Joe Bowman, when Billy Myers, who had doubled, scored on a ground out by Ival Goodman. The Reds scored a second run in the fourth inning when Billy Sullivan, who had singled and later advanced to third base, scored on a Gilly Campbell ground out. The Phillies' lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Al Todd singled and later scored on a Joe Bowman ground out. Despite not being used to night games, only a total of four players struck out in the game, one for the Phillies and three for the Reds. The offered ticket stub measures approx. 1.3x3.2". The ticket is marked at $1.50 for a "lower grand stand" seat. Machine-printed on the stub is "First Night Game 1935". The offering comes with a postcard that depicts this first night game. The offered stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded VG 3.
