Collection of eleven rare large-format (8.5x6.5") glass plate negatives capturing five different Major League clubs during spring training, circa 1910s. The name of each respective team, along with the location of their spring training site, is etched along the base. The teams represented here, with the number of negatives for each club noted in parentheses, are as follows: Chicago Cubs (3), Philadelphia Athletics (2), Cleveland Naps (2), Brooklyn Robins (2), and St. Louis Cardinals (2). All the negatives are action images and picture the clubs working out on the field, with several also capturing intrasquad games. Although none of the players can be conclusively identified because of the camera perspective, early spring training images such as these are seldom seen and provide a unique look back in time at the nature of the game during the early 1900s. These are certainly one-of-a-kind images and ones that would appeal to both photo collectors and baseball historians. One each of the Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Chicago, and St. Louis negatives display an emulsion in the center that slightly affects the main image. The other Philadelphia negative displays a small chip in the upper left corner. The remainder display a few minor border flaws that do not affect the main images. These negatives originate from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive and are accompanied by their original storage box (marked "C4 Spring Training"). A corresponding envelope erroneously lists the negatives as "N. Y. Giants."
