Duke Kahanamoku was an absolutely amazing man. Offered is a Type III vintage photograph of Duke Kahanamoku that he has inscribed and signed. Born into a family of minor Hawaiian nobility, the name of Duke is neither a title or a nickname; it is his given name. The 6'1", 190-pound athlete was born in Hawaii in 1890. In Hawaii, Kahanamoku became an outstanding freestyle swimmer. He became a 5-time Olympic medalist, winning medals in the 1912, '20, and '24 Olympics. The 1916 Olympics were canceled because of World War I. In between Olympics and after he retired from Olympic competition, Duke traveled to many areas of the world giving swimming exhibitions. He also demonstrated his skill in surfing, and in the early 1900s, surfing was almost never seen outside of Hawaii. Often using the 16-foot and 114-pound wood surfboard that he preferred, Kahanamoku spread surfing to Southern California and Australia. His great fame as a swimmer and his personality made him very popular, and he is foremost in the world in popularizing surfing. He was well-liked in Hollywood, California, and he appeared in numerous movies, sometimes playing himself, from 1925-67. Kahanamoku is the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame. The photo measures 7x9.8". Duke has inscribed and signed the photo in ink. He inscribed and signed the photo as, "To Jimmie Graham "Aloha"/Duke P. Kahanamoku Honolulu, J.H. (Jurisdiction of Hawaii)/3/13/36." In addition, the signed photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified as "Type III AUTHENTIC (1930s)."
