Feared by opponents as a netminder not at all afraid to defend his territory (using sticks such as this one), Smitty was known to fans as one of the great clutch goalies of all time, spearheading the talented Islanders to four straight Stanley Cup championships dating from 1979-80 to 1982-83. Also, Battling Billy became the first goaltender to be credited with a goal, on November 28, 1979, as Colorado Rockies defenseman Rob Ramage - on a delayed penalty - shot the puck into his own empty net, with Smith credited with the goal as the last player to touch the puck while making a save.
