One-page handwritten letter, dated February 11, 1878, signed by Alfred H. Wright, a baseball reporter for the "Philadelphia Sunday Mercury." In his letter, to H. S. Sprague, secretary of the Buffalo Base Ball Club, Wright emphatically recommends outfielder David Eggler, who he describes as a "thoroughly reliable and honest player" and "for his abilities I can refer you to any ball player." Eggler began his professional career with the New York Mutuals of the National Association during the league's inaugural season of 1871 (the National Association was the first professional baseball league). He played with both the Mutuals and Athletics of the National Association before the National Association folded after the 1875 season. He then continued his career with the Athletics and White Stockings of the newly formed National League for the 1876 and 1877 seasons, respectively, Eggler's reputation probably proceeded him, but this letter of recommendation probably did not hurt, as Buffalo did indeed sign him for the 1878 season. Buffalo was champion of the International Association in 1878 before joining the National League in 1879. Eggler played with Buffalo both in 1878 and 1879 before joining Baltimore of the American Association for the start of the start of the 1883 season. He rejoined Buffalo in mid-season of 1883 and remained with the club through the close of his career in 1885. The letter, on "Sunday Mercury Building" letterhead, measures 5x8" and displays a single vertical fold, and a small stain in the lower right corner.
