During the 1994-1995 NHL Hockey strike, Wayne Gretzky formed a team of all-star players to participate in a series of exhibition games overseas. Gretzky's "Ninety-Nine" All Star team won five of the seven games against some of Europe's top clubs before returning home in late December of 1994. In commemoration of that tour, Upper Deck issued a series of 999 commemorative Wayne Gretzky "Ninety-Nine" tour jerseys, each personally signed by Wayne Gretzky in black Sharpie on the reverse. Offered here is one of those scarce limited-edition jerseys, which has been inscribed "Wayne Gretzky 99 - Tour 94" (grading 9/10) on the reverse number (first numeral "9"). It has been hand-numbered "217/999" at the base of the numeral. The red-and-white jersey (size 56") is an exact replica of the jersey worn by Gretzky on the tour and features his name and number ("99") on the reverse, as well as various patches on the front and sleeves. Near Mint condition. The jersey is accompanied by the original Upper Deck flyer advertising the limited-edition offering, which lists the cost of the jersey at $999. An Upper Deck hologram label appears on the reverse, while the corresponding Upper Deck COA has been affixed to the base on the reverse.
