Displayed is a 1967 Dave McNally signed Baltimore Orioles home jersey. Dave McNally was a top flight left-handed starting pitcher with the Baltimore Orioles who pitched from 1962-75 in the Major Leagues, all but his final season for Baltimore. McNally had a brilliant run as a starting pitcher from 1968-71, as he won at least 20 games in each of those seasons. In fact, in the 1970 season the Orioles had an amazing four 20-game winners: McNally, Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, and Pat Dobson. The 5'11" McNally was a 3-time All-Star. McNally was a member of two Baltimore Orioles World Champion teams, in '66 and '70. The portsider had a lifetime record of 184-119, with a career 3.24 ERA. McNally was also involved in a very important baseball legal decision. In 1975, McNally (then with the Montreal Expos) and Andy Messersmith (then with the Los Angeles Dodgers) played the season without signing contracts and then claimed they were free agents. When baseball arbiter Peter Seitz ruled in favor of McNally and Messersmith, it opened the door for the modification of the reserve clause and paved the way for future free agency. The home jersey is all original, including the name on the back. The white home jersey has "Orioles" in orange script, with black trim, sewn on the chest and "19", in orange numerals with black trim, sewn below "Orioles." Seven buttons are arrayed down the front. The back has "McNally" in black, block letters, and below the name is "19" in orange numerals with black trim sewn on. The collar has a "Wilson/(Size) 42 tag. On the lower left outside tail is a "67-1" strip. There is a name written in the collar, but it may be the name of the person who originally received this jersey. There is no evidence of any changes if the jersey had been sent to the minors. Because the jersey is all original, we do not believe that it was sent down to the minors for use there, or if it was, it was taken home before it could be stripped of the original name on back. McNally has neatly signed the jersey on the left chest, using a black marker. The jersey shows fine use and yet is in excellent condition, and it represents one of the Baltimore Orioles finest pitchers and a free agent trailblazer.
