Eppa Rixey is a Hall of Fame right-handed pitcher who played 21 seasons in the National League and won 266 games. Rixey played in the Major Leagues from 1912-1933, except for 1918, when he was in military service. Rixey played eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, and then 13 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1969, he was voted by fans as the greatest left-handed pitcher in Cincinnati Reds' history. Rixey was unusual for his time in that he was a college graduate from a well-off family. His uncle, John Franklin Rixey, was a U.S. Congressman, and another uncle, Preston Manon Rixey, was the Surgeon General of the United States Navy. Until Rixey was joined on the Phillies by other college graduates, he took a great deal of hazing from his teammates. Presented is a die cut, original, signed and inscribed Rixey photograph (irregularly shaped and measuring approx. 4.25x6.25") that is glued on an album page measuring approx. 5.25x8". Two other smaller vintage die cut photos were also glued on the album page. The largest of the photos is signed and inscribed by Rixey in 8/10 fountain ink. Above his signature, Rixey inscribed, "To Morris S. Turner with best wishes." Below his signature, Rixey inscribed, "Nov. 18, 1935." In an unknown hand, the back of the album page, is written (in part) "M.S. Turner/1931." The well-liked Rixey had a fine sense of humor, and when he was elected to the Hall of Fame he quipped, "They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel, aren't they?" The album page shows a few tiny stains, and a stain slightly over 0.25" on the left side, most likely a remnant from glue or tape. The item has a beautiful signature, and it makes an attractive display piece.
