The composite photo features images of thirteen members of the 1949 Notre Dame football team, including coach Frank Leahy, surrounding a large team-signed football. Included among the sixty-two signatures on the reverse are those of Heisman Trophy winner Leon Hart, Emil Sitka, Bob Toneff, Larry Coutre, Bob Williams, Bill Wightkin, Jim Martin, Rodney Johnson, Walt Grothaus, Bob Lally, Frank Spaniel, Frank Johnston, Daniel Modak, Jack Connor, James Hamley, Bill Higgins, Gene Smith, Chet Ostrowski, Jim Bartlett, Bill Kramer, and Art Perry. All the signatures are fairly uniform in grade average 8/10, except for three that are partially illegible (3/10 on average). Notre Dame finished the season with a 10-0 record and was named the National Champion following its win over SMU in the Cotton Bowl. It was the third National Championship for Notre Dame in the past four seasons and marked the end of what is considered one of the greatest collegiate sports dynasties in history.
