Presented is a panorama photo from the famous football game between undefeated Ohio State and undefeated Northwestern on Nov. 25, 1916. The photo features three-time All-American halfback Chic Harley carrying the ball around right end during the 23-3. Ohio State Buckeyes victory. The victory gave Ohio State the Western Conference championship. Harley was a consensus First Team All-American in 1916, the Buckeyes' first-ever football player to reach that status. In his career, Harley scored 201 points in 23 games. He was a right halfback on offense, a safety on defense, and the team's punter and placekicker. He missed the 1918 season when he was serving as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I. Harley was a unique runner, combining speed and power in an electrifying way. Famed writer James Thurber, writing for the New York City newspaper P.M., described Harley's running thusly: "If you never saw him run with a football, I can't describe it to you. It wasn't like Red Grange or Tom Harmon or anybody else. It was kind of a cross between music and cannon fire, and it brought your heart up between your ears." Harley was one of the original inductees to the College Football Hall of fame. The panoramic photo measures approx. 5x17.5". The photo is displayed on a thick cardboard backing at approx. 6.5x18.5". The backing part of the left upper corner missing and several spots show wear, especially in the corners and along the edges. The bottom right corner of the backing has a crease and bend in it. Also, the backing has a concave bend. The bottom part of the photo reads, "Harley starting a run around right end/Ohio State 23 - Northwestern 3." The photo has some fading from the passage of time. Although the photo and backing exhibit some imperfections, the vintage photo combines a great runner in action during a game that placed Ohio State football on the national map and led to the construction of a new home field to replace Ohio Field, seating 22,000 at maximum, with the then 66,220 seat Ohio Stadium, termed "The House That Harley Built." The vintage uniforms and the great panoramic view of a classic game make this photo a fine collectible.
