The Ringling Brothers World's Greatest Shows was founded in Baraboo, Wisconsin by five of the seven Ringling Brothers. Offered is a group of three of their signed business checks from 1912-1914. At first, the Ringling Brothers performed skits and juggling routines, usually in town halls across Wisconsin. The first show was on November 27, 1882, in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. The brothers' group first became a circus in 1884 when they acquired a ring in which to perform. and later that year they added a trick horse and a bear. The Ringling Brothers acquired the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907 but kept the Ringling Brothers Circus and the Barnum & Bailey Circus until 1919. At this time, World War I caused business to go down and many performers were in the United States military, so the two separate circuses started to perform as one entity known as The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Each of the three Ringling Brothers checks is from the Bank of Baraboo, Wisconsin. The checks measure 8.5x3.25". The first check is imprinted with a portrait of the five brothers (in the upper left corner). The check is made out to John Stoker in the amount of six dollars and dated April 20, 1912. The check was written by an unknown hand and signed by Henry Ringling. This check is in excellent condition, with two insignificant smudges to the signature and a trivial crease to the top edge. The second check is also filled out in an unknown hand and signed by Charles Ringling. The check is payable to the United States Tent and Awning Company for six dollars and dated September 16, 1914. The check is in excellent condition, with the typical holes from cancellation that do not impact the signature. The third check has a most fitting and an artistic tiger background. Written in an unknown hand, Al Ringling has signed the check in indelible blue pencil. The check is dated December 22, 1913, and it is payable to F.E. Shults for ten dollars. The check is in very good condition. Because of declining attendance and pressure from animal rights groups, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus stopped performing after its last show, on May 21, 2017. However, the circus is scheduled to be revived - this time performing without animals - and the circus made its first comeback performance on September 28, 2022, and is touring more than 50 cities. The checks are separately encapsulated, and Beckett Authentication Services has graded each autograph as AUTHENTIC. The checks also come with a PSA LOA.
