Eric Gregg was only the third African American umpire to work in the Major Leagues, and he had a colorful and controversial career. Presented is a game worn National League umpire's shirt that Gregg has autographed. The arbiter was born in Philadelphia, and he kept his ties to the city. He reached the Major Leagues at only 21-years-old. He was known for his jocular personality and engaging smile, a smile that would disarm players who became angry at one of his calls. Gregg umpired in four National League Championship Series and in the 1989 and 1997 World Series. Eric umpired the plate in Game 5 of the 1997 National League Championship Series and his generous strike zone helped the Florida Marlins' pitcher Livan Hernandez record a career high 15 strikeouts in his victory over the Atlanta Braves. Gregg's weight was usually listed between 315-325 pounds, but he admitted that at times his weight approached 400 pounds. Later in his career, he did take off a significant number of pounds. When the Major League umpires went on strike during the 1999 season and jointly resigned, some umpires were later rehired, but Gregg was not. After his umpiring career, the gregarious Gregg often tended bar at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, and later at the city's new stadium, Citizens Bank Park. The blue shirt with red and white trim has a neck tag that has the MLB emblem on a manufacturer's tag from Logo Athletic. Under the manufacturer's tag is a size tag reading "xx - Large Base." The front of the shirt has another MLB logo. Gregg signed the shirt in gold marker in neatly, written, large script. Around the signature, Gregg inscribed his umpire umber "7," and also added "NL Umpire 1997." The left sleeve of the shirt has Gregg's number "7" in red with white trim. The right sleeve has a patch honoring Jackie Robinson. The patch reads "Jackie Robinson (in a facsimile autograph), and "1947 50th 1997 Breaking Barriers." The lower inside tail has a tag that reads "Cool Max/Cooler Drier Performance." The top of the back of the shirt has what appears to be a manufacturer's logo. The shirt shows good use and is in excellent condition. The signed and inscribed shirt is a fitting collectible from a memorable umpire.
