How about that? A 1951 New York Yankee Employee Pass for announcer Mel Allen is offered. Allen's trademark "How about that?" phrase was long associated with the broadcaster as was his home run call of "Going, going, gone." Allen, born as Melvin Allen Israel, used his first and middle names as his broadcasting moniker and later officially changed his name to Mel Allen. He began announcing games for the Yankees in 1939, and except for a single season when the Yankees did not broadcast the team's games, he stayed with the Yankees through the 1964 season, when he was fired (for undisclosed reasons), but he later returned to do limited broadcast work for the Yankees in later years. The 1951 season was the season of "The Shot Heard 'Round the World," when the New York Giants defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in a dramatic playoff series but lost to the Yankees in the World Series. The employee pass measures approx. 2.75x4.25". The pass is numbered on the front as No. 10. The front also includes the red, white, and blue Yankee logo and the facsimile signature of Yankee president Daniel Topping. On the back printed "This is a non-transferable identification card only and is not good for any admission." Allen broadcast 22 World Series, and in his later years he was the voice of "This Week in Baseball." He is in the National (USA) Sportscasters and Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame, and the Radio Hall of Fame. The employee pass exhibits some darkening and foxing on the back, but is in overall excellent condition, and it is a fitting remembrance for a New York Yankee broadcast legend.
