"Get up and fight, sucker," screamed Muhammad Ali at Sonny Liston as Liston was prone on the canvas. This iconic photo was taken during the second Heavyweight Championship fight between Ali and Liston. In their first meeting, in Miami Beach, Florida on Feb. 25,1964, Liston was a heavy favorite against Ali, then known as Cassius Clay. Ali used his youth, quickness, and superior conditioning to dance around Liston. Then, in Round 6, Ali hit Liston with a furious flurry of punches, and Liston "threw in the towel" and failed to answer the bell for the next round, giving Ali the World's Heavyweight Championship. The fighters met again on May 25, 1965, in a hockey arena in Lewiston, Maine. In the rematch, Ali hit Liston with what some called a "phantom punch" and Liston went to the canvas. Referee Jersey Joe Walcott could not get Ali to go to a neutral corner as Ali stood over Liston, taunting him. Instead of an eight second count, Liston took 20 seconds to get up, fought Ali for a few seconds and then Walcott declared Ali the victor on a knockout, from Ali's earlier punch. Some said the fight was fixed and that Ali never hit Liston with a knockout punch. but later film study of the fight suggested to many fight experts that there was a sufficiently hard right-handed punch by Ali to knock out Liston, the first time Liston had ever been knocked out. The famous photo of the Ali-Liston II knockout is one of the most well-known photos in boxing history. The photo itself measures 15.5x19.25" and it is matted and framed at 21.5x25.5". Muhammad Ali has boldly signed the photo in silver marker. This signed photo is sure to attract attention and inspire discussion.
