The new American Football League made its debut in 1960, and programs from a home game of one of the original AFL teams, the Oakland Raiders, are scarce. Offered is a rare first year Oakland Raider program from the team's home game on Oct 16, 1960, at Kezar Stadium against the Boston Patriots. The Raiders won on this date, defeating Boston by 27-10. Interestingly, the Raiders had to use Kezar Stadium, a playing field in San Francisco, for the inaugural campaign. The new team had a 6-8 record in 1960, finishing in 3rd place in the Western Division. The team's head coach was Eddie Erdelatz, and the Raiders' starting quarterback was Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tom Flores. The Raiders' starting center in 1960 was Hall of Famer Jim Otto, who started at center for the Raiders for his entire 15-year pro career. The 44-page program measures approximately 8x10.5", and it sold for 50 cents. Even though pro football was now played with both offensive and defensive starters, in an anachronistic way, the program features such positional designations as "HB" (halfback) for both offensive and defensive backs. Similarly, tackles and ends are designated "T" and "E" for both offensive and defensive players. Another wonderful vintage touch is a small photograph of San Francisco Examiner sportswriter Prescott Sullivan that is the archetype of the sportswriter of an earlier era, circa 1940. The black and white photo shows Sullivan sitting indoors, wearing his fedora (with a hatband) on his head, a cigar stub in his mouth, and writing while on the phone. Yet another vintage aspect is that in the early days of the AFL, teams would lean towards "local" players in attempts to draw more hometown fans. For example, 16 of the 35 players listed on the Oakland Raider roster in the program are from California. In addition, six of the 35 players listed for the Boston Patriots are from Massachusetts. In 1963, Hall of Famer Al Davis became the Raiders' coach and later John Madden would take the coaching reins, and the team would move to Los Angeles, then back to Oakland, and then to the franchise's present home in Las Vegas; but in 1960, the Raiders' three Super Bowl Championships were far in the future. The presented program makes an outstanding throwback memento from the storied Oakland Raiders' inaugural season.
