Presented is a 1902 photolithographed poster featuring Brown University football and illustrated by Bristow Adams. The artist was a professor, journalist, forester, and illustrator. He taught at Cornell University from 1914-45. Adams founded the Stanford Chapparral, the oldest humor magazine in the West. The poster is illustrated in black, white, gray and brown - with the brown color fittingly added because the poster depicts a Brown University football player, a member of the Brown Bears. The illustration depicts a Brown player, in the leather helmets of the era, running with the football, rounder than more-modern footballs. The lower fifth of the poster depicts a representation of the gates to the Brown University campus. This Brown photolithograph was copyrighted by The Potomac press, of Washington, D.C. Adams was also the illustrator of two scarce rowing posters between 1900 and 1910, one for Harvard and one for Cornell. The 1902 Brown football team played as an independent, held their home contests at Providence's Andrews Field, and had a record of 5-4-1. The poster exhibits some natural darkening because of age, but overall, it is in excellent condition. It is farmed at 15.5x23.5", and the wooden frame shows wear in some minor paint loss and scuffing, particularly on the corners and the bottom. The poster features the unique style of Adams, and it will be a charming, vintage football addition to any sports collection.
