Sterling silver trophy cup, with removable lid, awarded to the owners of Arts And Letters for his victory in the 1969 Metropolitan Handicap held at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. The two-handled cup is engraved "New York Racing Association" in large lettering along the top portion. The engraving below reads "The Metropolitan/1969/Won by/Rokeby Stables/Arts And Letters/Trainer Elliot Burch." The Metropolitan Handicap was one of eight major wins, including the Travers and Belmont Stakes, recorded by Arts And Letters in 1969, which helped earn him the titles of both United States Horse of the Year and American Champion Three-Year-Old-Male Horse at season's end. His trainer, Elliot Burch, was later inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 1980. The trophy is marked "Sterling" on both the underside of the lid and the underside of the cup. The cup displays a two-inch diagonal dent on the front and two smaller dents on the reverse. In Very Good condition overall. Base diameter: 4.25 inches. Height (with lid): 10.5 inches. Weight (with lid): 31.75 ounces.
