There is only one person who was the first African American manager in Major League baseball history, Frank Robinson, and he broke the so-called managerial "color line" in 1975 when he became the player-manager of the Cleveland Indians. Presented is a game worn jersey that he wore while he was the manager of the San Francisco Giants in 1982. Before Robinson created history as a manager, he was a superb player who is in the Hall of Fame as a player. The outfielder is the only man to ever win MVP awards in both leagues. He won the National League MVP in 1961 when he helped lead the Cincinnati Reds to the pennant. He won the American league MVP when he won the Triple Crown in 1966 when playing for the Orioles. The jersey has a "20 82" tag on front, indicating Robinson's number and the year. There is a Wilson size "42" tag in the neck. "Giants" is in orange script across the chest. On the left chest is "20" in orange numerals. Across the back is "Robinson" in orange block letters. On the back is "20" in orange numerals. Robinson has signed the jersey on the "0" of the number "20" on the back in neatly written script with a fine tipped black marker. Robinson was known as a tough player, and he crowded the plate. He led his league in being hit by pitches six times. "Pitchers did me a favor by knocking me down," said Robinson. "It made me more determined. They say you can't hit if you're on your back, but I didn't hit on my back. I got up." That determination helped Robinson set records and break through barriers of discrimination. His jersey has real significance.
