Presented is a rare Grateful Dead poster advertising the Boston Tea Party concert held on December 29, 30, and 31 in 1969. Steve Nelson, at that time the new owner of the Boston Tea Party concert hall, wanted to distinguish his concert venue. He stated, "I was very conscious of trying to develop an image for the Boston Tea Party that set it apart from the psychedelic concerts at the West Coast. I brought in my friend Bob Driscoll to do posters and ads. He created an entirely new unpsychedelic look, spare with lots of white space, very New York, minimalist, usually in black and white." The Boston Tea Party concert, held across the street from Fenway Park, included a New Year's Eve performance that was very unusual, as the Grateful Dead usually performed in the Bay Area of California on that date. The three concerts at the Boston Tea Party included songs from the as yet unreleased albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, and the concert included acoustic songs such as "Uncle John's Band", "High Times", and "Black Peter". The 11x17" black and white poster has staple holes in each corner, some creases at the corners, and some mild foxing. During the 1970s, concerts by iconic bands began to move to arenas and stadia, so this poster is a valuable keepsake from a time when world famous bands still played in smaller venues.
