The cover of Joni Mitchell's 15th album, the Grammy Award-winning Turbulent Indigo, is a self-portrait done by Mitchell in a reference to Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. Although far better known as a recording artist, Mitchell attended art school in her younger years and has been painting most of her life. In the song "Turbulent Indigo," Mitchell's lyrics equate the turmoil the musical artist faces to that of Van Gogh as a painter, as both suffer in the creative process. In this striking self-portrait, Mitchell's image, like the painting "Self-Portrait with Damaged Ear" completed by Van Gogh after his self-mutilation, has a bandaged ear. Another key song on the album is "Borderline." In this track, Mitchell speaks of the intense anger and jealousy felt by sufferers of borderline personality disorder. An effective technique that Mitchell uses in the album is that she both sings, and plays her acoustic guitar, in an upbeat manner in a contrast to the often-sad lyrics. The juxtaposition enhances both moods. The painting measures 21.5" x 25.5" and matted and framed at 30.25" x 35". The signature "Joni Mitchell" and year "94" are on the white border of the lithograph, and it is written in flowing, large script in pencil. The offering has substantial appeal to collectors of both music and art, and the self-portrait is a unique item.
