"Shell" is lettered in gold tackle twill upon a black nameplate on the reverse above the number. Located on the left front tail are a "Medalist/Sand Knit size 46" label and small white strip tag bearing the year "77" embroidered in black. The jersey is all original and displays heavy wear, including abrasions on the numerals and team repairs on the front, reverse, and shoulders. Shell started all 14 games for the Steelers in 1977 and finished the year with three interceptions and one fumble recovery. Donnie Shell was one of the greatest defensive backs in team history and a member of the Steelers' legendary "Steel Curtain Defense" of the 1970s. Shell helped lead the Steelers to four Super Bowl Championships during his 14-year career (1974-1987). Included among his many achievements and accomplishments are three First Team All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowl appearances, 51 career interceptions, and selections to both the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor and Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team.
