Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey worn by Hall of Fame reliever Rich "Goose" Gossage during the 1977 season. In addition to dating to Gossage's only season with Pittsburgh, this is a scarce style jersey that was used by Pittsburgh for just the three-year span 1977-1979. The white knit jersey, with gold pinstripes, is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number "54" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold tackle twill. Located on the left front tail are a "Descente" label, a laundry tag, and a flag tag reading "Set II 1977." Directly below the tagging is a strip tag with the jersey number, size and year ("54 44 77") embroidered in black. The jersey is all original and displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including light, scattered staining (mainly on the reverse). Gossage joined Pittsburgh in 1977 after being traded from the White Sox, along with Terry Forster, for slugger Richie Zisk and Silvio Martinez. Gossage had been misused as a starting pitcher by Chicago in 1976, but the Pirates put him back in the bullpen in 1977. Gossage responded with one of the most dominant seasons of his storied career. Gossage appeared in 72 games and finished the season with an 11-9 record, 26 saves, and a 1.62 ERA. In 133 innings, he allowed just 78 hits and struck out 151 batters. Inexplicably, the Pirates chose not to re-sign Gossage after the season and he became a free agent. Signing with the Yankees, Gossage then helped lead the Yankees to their second consecutive World Championship in 1978. One of the most intimidating relievers in baseball history, Gossage retired in 1994 with 310 saves and a 3.01 ERA. In 2008 he became just the fifth reliever to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (three others have been inducted since that time). This is an outstanding and rare Gossage jersey dating from his brief stint with the Pirates.
