Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey worn by second baseman Rennie Stennett during the club's 1979 World Championship season. This is also a scarce style jersey that was used by the Pirates only during the three-year span 1977-1979. The white knit jersey, with gold pinstripes, is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number "6" on the left breast and reverse. "Stennett" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold tackle twill. A "Descente" label is located on the left front tail. Below that is a white strip tag with the jersey number, size and year ("6 42 79") embroidered in black. A laundry tag, which was adjacent to the Descente label, has been removed (a remnant remains), otherwise the jersey is original as issued. Moderate-to-heavy wear is displayed throughout, including light scattered staining/foxing on the reverse. 1979 marked Rennie Stennett's final year with Pittsburgh, and he went out in style, as he helped lead the Pirates to their second World Championship of the decade. Stennnett, who was the club's starting second baseman for eight seasons beginning in 1972, batted .238 with 0 home runs and 24 RBI in 1979. Despite his steady play for over a decade, Stennett is best remembered today for his amazing feat on September 16, 1975, when he tied a Major League record by recording seven hits in a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Stennett retired in 1981 with 41 home runs, 432 RBI, and a .274 lifetime average.
