Gil Hodges signed checks are among the rarest of all modern-day stars. This is the first we have offered and we can recall having seen only one or two others at auction in the past ten years. Adding to its appeal is that the check features his full-name "Gilbert Hodges" signature. Hodges' blue-ink signature, which appears at the base, is well executed and grades 8/10. Hodges signed this check in his capacity as president of "Gil Hodges Lanes, Inc.," which was a bowling alley he owned in Brooklyn. The company's printed name and address appear at the top of the check. Presumably, this is one of several pre-signed checks held in reserve by the company's bookkeeper for use when Hodges was not available, as it bears no date and has not been made out to any person or party. A series of cancellation punches have obscured the bank-account number at the base, rendering the check void.
