Walter Johnson Base Ball Game, signed by the legendary "Big Train" on the box cover. The colorful design of the box front features a large photo of Johnson in a pitching pose set against an illustrated game in progress. Johnson's endorsement, "Next Best to The Real Game," appears in the bottom right corner. Johnson has carefully signed the cover in black ink (7/10) along his pitching arm. Interestingly, we have seen only a few other signed examples of this game, and in all instances Johnson has signed the piece in the same spot. Obviously, he was concerned about the contrast of his signature against the darker-colored background and decided that the white color of his uniform sleeve was the ideal spot for maximum visibility. This game was first produced in 1930 and remained in production throughout the decade, which was well after Johnson's playing career. The game includes the original playing board (10x14"; VG), three scoresheets (6x9"; VG-EX), two spinners (one with a broken top, and six playing tokens. Both the lid and base display several large tears, foxing, and tape repair to the broken flaps. Fortunately, none of the flaws affect the game's main appeal, which is Johnson's signature, and it remains well suited for display. Full LOA from PSA.
