Collection of three significant First Editions that are essential for any advanced baseball library. 1) 1911 The Book of Baseball by William Patten and J. Walker McSpadden. (P. F. Collier & Son, New York). This was a comprehensive history of the game from its earliest beginnings to the present. It was especially notable for its large-format (measuring 11x15.5") and numerous photographs. Almost every major star is pictured, often more than once, and there are many team photos and panoramic game-action scenes. The boards, which are original, but appear to have been re-bound at some point, display moderate wear, especially along the edges. A name stamp and book plate of two former owners appear on the front flyleaf, and a "Goodwin Goldfaden" bookseller's stamp and bookbinder's label appear on the rear flyleaf. The pages remain clean and bright. In Very Good condition and finer than most examples we have seen. 2) 1910 The National Game by Alfred H. Spink (National Game Publishing Co., St. Louis). The history of the game as told by the editor and founder of The Sporting News. Lavishly illustrated. The boards, which are original, but appear to have been re-bound at some point, display moderate wear. A few of the pages displays small tears, some of which have been repaired with clear tape. In Good to Very Good condition overall. 3) 1933 Who's Who in Major League Base Ball by Harold "Speed" Johnson with original dust jacket (Buxton Publishing Co., Chicago). This was a special large-format hardbound edition of the annual guide and has long been a favorite among collectors. This example is especially noteworthy because it comes complete with the seldom seen original dust jacket. The covers display light wear and the pages are clean and bright. Excellent condition. The dust jacket displays numerous tears along the edges, with an area of paper loss at the top of spine, and is in Fair to Good condition. Accompanied by a period magazine page featuring an advertisement for the book.
