Presented is a ticket stub to one of the most memorable basketball games in UCLA history, yet one that did not even count in the varsity's official season record. November 27, 1965, was the first game at UCLA's new home, Pauley Pavilion, and the first game for UCLA frosh Lew Alcindor. The exhibition contest pitted the UCLA freshmen against the UCLA varsity. Writer Mel Florence of The Times said, "Two structures will be unveiled on the Westwood Campus. One more enduring, but both awe-inspiring." The UCLA varsity had won the two previous National Championships, and they were ranked first in the country with three starters and a key reserve returning. Freshmen were not then allowed to play on a college varsity basketball team. The frosh destroyed the varsity on this special night by a score of 75-60. Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, scored 31 points and pulled down 21 rebounds. The UCLA varsity went 18-8 for the season and did not qualify for the NCAA tournament because they did not win their league championship. The freshmen went 21-0 and averaged nearly a 57-point margin of victory in their outings. With Alcindor (Abdul-Jabbar) on the varsity the next three seasons, UCLA won three consecutive NCAA Championships. The ticket stub is encapsulated and graded by PSA as VG-EX 4. The ticket stub includes a small black and white photo of UCLA coach John Wooden and features the words, "Salute to John Wooden". The ticket stub is a fine memento for the debut of a beautiful arena, and moreover, the start of the college career of an all-time icon. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA and is one of two VG-EX 4 examples, with only three PSA 5s grading higher.
