Exceptional circa 1860 lemon-peel ball. Lemon-peel balls are so named because their covers are made of a single piece of cut leather, with the stitching all coming together at a single point at the top. The resulting stitch pattern resembles the peel of a cut lemon. The offered example displays a high degree of craftsmanship and appears to have been professionally constructed. Although the leather is worn, with crazing and a few abrasions, it remains supple. The white stitching is complete, with no tears, and is as tight as the day it was made. Circumference 10". Weight: 5.25 ounces. One of the finer examples we have seen.
