Vintage photograph, taken by George Grantham Bain, capturing a large contingent of Giants fans as they sit crammed into the grandstands at the Polo Grounds. An etching upon the negative, which appears as a white-letter caption along the top border, reads "Record Crowd at Polo Grounds." The photo has been backed with tape bearing two Culver Pictures, Inc. credit stamps, and a Culver "Deaccessioned" stamp. Underneath the tape, one can see an earlier Culver label. The year 1908 is written on the reverse in pencil. Given the year, and the caption on the front, the scene pictured here can only be from the historic makeup game between the Giants and Cubs at the Polo Grounds on October 8, 1908, when over 40,000 fans packed the stadium. That game was made necessary because of "Merkle's Boner" two weeks earlier on September 23rd. In that game, Giants first baseman Fred Merkle, who was on first base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, failed to touch second base after a game-winning hit, resulting in a force out. Instead of the Giants winning, the game was declared a tie. After the Giants and Cubs finished tied at the end of the regular season, the clubs were forced to make up the game at the Polo Grounds on October 8th. Unfortunately for Merkle and the Giants, the Cubs won the game 4-2 and then went on to defeat the Tigers in the World Series. The photo measures 6.5x4.25" and displays two corner chips and light creasing. Very Good condition.
