Circa 1930s large-format photograph of Charles Berger, a member of the Atlantic City Sea Gulls hockey team. The photo pictures Berger in uniform posing on the ice. The hand-lettered text along the left border reads "Marlborough-Blenheim Representative on Atlantic City's Famous Ice Hockey Team 'The Sea Gulls' Charles Berger In the auditorium Every Saturday Night." A photographer's credit appears in the lower right corner, but is partially obscured by the framing. The Sea Gulls were members of the Eastern Amateur Hockey League from 1933 to 1942, and also for the 1947-1948 and 1951-1952 seasons. The Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel was a famous Atlantic City resort and the largest reinforced concrete building in the world. Obviously, given the text, Berger was an employee of the hotel and it sought to capitalize on his popularity as a player by promoting his public appearance in its auditorium every weekend. This is an exceptionally rare hockey item and the only such example we have ever handled. The photo measures 18x23.75" (visible dimensions) and displays light staining in the lower left and a few minor border abrasions, tears, and blemishes. In apparent Very Good to Excellent condition. Framed to total dimensions of 21x26.75".
