Classic panoramic team photo features the 1938 Pittsburgh Pirates, complete with signatures of most of those depicted and with exceptional provenance. Len Martin and Dan Bonk authored a "Build It Yourself" model book on Forbes Field in 1994, a particular challenge because it was demolished in the early '70s. They interviewed and befriended many with intimate personal knowledge of Forbes, including surviving members of the Dreyfuss and Benswanger families (owners of the Pirates from 1900 to 1946); they received both photos (the other is also available in this auction) as tokens of appreciation from a member of the Benswanger family approximately 20 years ago. Framed to 36x9.5", the bottom center reads Pittsburgh Pirates Mar 16, 1938, with bottom right reading, Photo by C.N. Jackson, Cotton, Calif., for Brewer's Studios, SB. Aged to a spectacular sepia tone, a total of 39 signatures grace this stellar issue, including the immortal J. Honus Wagner, along with Hall of Famers Paul Waner, Arky Vaughn, and Manager Pie Traynor. Photo itself is in VG condition with some creases and scattered minor stains, and "Picture No. 2" is written on the bottom; still has spectacular eye appeal in black frame.This piece came from the estate of William Edward Benswanger.
