Just weeks after his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS - eventually to become known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), the New York Yankees' Iron Horse was honored at the Stadium, on July 4, 1939. Though many photos exist from that event, this is the ONLY one we have seen from this particular angle; taken from behind Gehrig - shaking hands with New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia - facing a line of dignitaries including Babe Ruth, standing out in a white suit, while fans stand in honor of the New York legend. Measures 9x7" and a slight corner crease is the only evident blemish; typewritten newswire caption affixed to back includes, "... a ceremony honoring the non-playing captain of the Yankees whose playing days have ended as a result of a diseased spine." Credit line reads (ACME) 7-4-39, with ACME Newspictures stamp and Jul 6, 1939 date stamp. Encapsulated PSA Type I Authentic.
