Rare original Type I photo depicts a mostly-forgotten moment in the controversial career of Heavyweight Champ Jack Johnson. Though his dominance and skin color made him widely reviled in his racially-polarized home country, this photo is from the Row Street Police Court in London, England, from which an injunction was issued preventing his scheduled bout with Brit "Bombardier" Billy Wells. As the fight was, in fact, canceled, this episode is little noted in his legendary resume and photos from this court appearance are scarce. Measures 6x7.5", small crease near bottom border, vintage pencil notation on verso reads, "Johnson arriving at Bow Street... in answer to his summons" along with stamps from Illustration Bureau and Brown Brothers. Comes with PSA LOA.
