Tremendous history in this 4.63x6.13” photo portraying Heavyweight Boxing Champion Jack Johnson circa 1910s. Resplendent in suit and bow tie, Johnson – who became the first Black champ in 1908 – is pictured with his wife, Etta, who was white. Frustrated by the very presence of a Black champion, the boxing establishment wooed former champ James Jeffries out of retirement as "The Great White Hope," though the Galveston Giant prevailed in their famed bout. Authorities used his marriage to a white woman to charge him with a violation of law for crossing state lines – with his own wife. Rear caption reads, "Jack Johnson and his wife at the Paris races" along with Doubleday Page Syndicate and multiple stamps from Brown Brothers. PSA LOA.
