Magnificent Type 1 photograph of the great Christy Mathewson, taken in the old Polo Grounds circa 1909. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I photograph by PSA/DNA, Mathewson is centrally pictured in mid-windup, with a clear vista of the left-field stands and a Giants player running the bases behind him. 'Big Six' was a dominant pitcher for the Giants right from the early 1900's, compiling a lifetime ERA of 2.13 and a total of of 373 wins by the time he was done pitching in 1916. He even managed a few seasons for the Cincinnati Reds after that, permanently hanging up his spikes in 1918. There are multiple "Brown Brothers" credit stamps on the reverse, along with "Matty" written in pencil. The photo (6 1/2" x 4 1/4") has no edge abraisions whatsoever, though there are a few slight indications of hazing on the top right and top center - otherwise, the photograph presents in Near Mint condition. A Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA is included.
