Off the success of its initial baseball offering in 1948, Bowman decided to put some color in its cards for 1949 and came up with this fine 240-card set. The set is anchored by the rookie cards of #84 Roy Campanella (PSA 4) and 226 Duke Snider (PSA 5). Other stars include #24 Musial (Minimum Size), 27 Feller (VG-EX), 33 Spahn (EX, light mark on reverse), 36 Reese (EX), 45 Mize (EX+), 46 Roberts RC (PSA 5), 47 Sain (EX-MT, light paper wrinkle), 50 Robinson (PSA 5), 70 Furillo (EX-MT), 98 Rizzuto NNOF (VG-EX), 100 Hodges (VG+), 110 Wynn (PSA 6), 111 Schoendienst (PSA 5), 224 Paige (PSA 5), 233 Doby (PSA 4), and 238 Lemon RC (PSA 4). Card #’s 60 (Berra), 145, 149, 165, 169, 171, 174, 176, 177, 178, 204, 205, 214 (Ashburn RC) and 220 are missing. The set has more than its share of variations, with several cards showing names both in print and signature forms on the reverse, and some with and without block-printed names on the front. The remainder of the cards grade 10% NM or better, 15% EX to EX-MT, 45% VG to VG-EX, 25% GD to VG and 5% lesser. Approx. 10% are oc and a small handful have creases. Find the 14 missing cards and have yourself a really nice mid-grade set of early Bowman!
