A piece of historical memorabilia from one of the more tragic stories in modern football history is offered herein. Ernie Davis was the first African-American to be awarded the Heisman trophy for his impressive playing at Syracuse University from 1959-61 and was quickly picked up by the Washington Redskins and then immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns. The Pittsburgh native wouldn't play one game however: shortly after being picked up, he developed leukemia and died in May, 1963. This yearbook is from Elmira Free Academy, the high school where he was known as the "Elmira Express," and is signed in blue pen: "Best of Luck Ernie." Yearbook shows slight wear.
