From Benny Paret's second fight (1961) versus Emile Griffith, the man who killed him six months later in the tragic 1962 bout. In this 1961 blockbuster Paret won the welterweight title in this striking royal blue satin robe with white lettering and white satin trim. These two fighters will be forever linked in the annals of both boxing and world history. Before the 1962 fight, Paret touched Griffith's buttocks and called him a "maricon," Cuban slang for homosexual (Griffith was reportedly bisexual). It was further embarrassment for Griffith in these intolerant times as it occurred in front of his girlfriend. Paret was known to play "chicken" somewhat and come back to win in bouts where he appeared badly beaten. That was not the case here as Griffith trapped Paret in the corner and unleashed a torrent of unanswered blows, hitting him in the head repeatedly. The referee, aware of Paret's chicken strategy, failed to stop it and Paret never regained consciousness. Because of the goriness of this fight and its being televised, boxing was not shown on television for years afterwards. The robe has some blood stains, tearing and some soiling. Comes with the matching white satin belt and made by Tuf-Wear with a New York, 11, N.Y." pre-1963 postal code.
