The 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers, with five future Hall of Famers in the starting lineup, went 97-57 in the regular season to win the National League pennant. As in 1941 and 1947, the '49 Dodgers lost the World Series to the New York Yankees. Displayed is a nice example of folk art about the '47 Dodgers: a metal ashtray encircling a metal miniature baseball.

In the '49 season, the five future Brooklyn Hall of Famers were Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, and Duke Snider. Robinson, at second base in '49, was the NL MVP and led the league in batting average (.342) and steals (37). Campanella hit 22 home runs with 82 RBIs; Gil Hodges had 23 round-trippers with 115 RBIs; Reese, at shortstop, hit .279 and led the NL in runs (132); Snider, in center field, batted .292 with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs.

The folk art metal ashtray is four inches high, with a 6" diameter. Around the top edge of the ashtray is etched, "NL CHAMPIONS 1949 DODGERS." The ashtray has a small bend in it, most likely from being dropped. The metal on both the surface tray and the raised baseball show surface loss, and darkening. There are some scratch marks and some small stains. The folk art ashtray weighs 31.9 ounces.
