Presented is a rare fountain pen and pencil set issued in commemoration of the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. This is the first example of this fountain pen and pencil set that we have seen. The Tigers won the Series, 4-3 in games, behind the American League MVP, pitcher Hal Newhouser, who went the distance in Game 7 in a 9-3 win. At the time of this World Series, many of the players who served in the Armed Forces during World War II were still on active duty, even though the war had ended. Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg, the Detroit slugging first baseman, who been given an early military discharge, and he hit the only home runs for the Tigers in this '45 Series. Greenberg also scored seven run and drove in seven. Other Hall of Famers in the '45 Series were Newhouser and umpire Jocko Conlan. The Cubs' "Curse of the Billy Goat" started in Game 4, as the Cubs did not appear in another World Series until 1984, and win another World Series until 2016. Detroit did not appear in another World Series until 1968, when the Tigers became World Champions again.

Both the wooden pen and pencil (each six inches in length) are designed in the shape of a baseball bat and are lettered, "Chicago Cubs/1945/Detroit Tigers" on the "barrel" and "World Series" on the "handle." Both remain in Near Mint to Mint condition. They are housed in their original red box.
