Brooklyn Dodgers home jersey worn by outfielder George "Shotgun" Shuba during the club's 1953 pennant-winning season. The white flannel jersey is lettered "Dodgers" across the front and features the number "8" on the left breast and reverse. All front letters and reverse numerals are applied in blue felt. All front numerals are applied in red felt. Both a "Rawlings" label and adjacent "42" size tag appear in the collar. Shuba's name, the year, and the set number ("Shuba 53-2") are chain-stitched in blue on the left front tail. A wash tag is located on the interior left front tail. Shuba has signed the jersey "George 'Shotgun' Shuba" in blue marker (grading 7/10) on the lower left tail. The jersey is original as issued and displays heavy wear, including numerous stains on the front, reverse, and shoulders, as well as heavy puckering on the front. Shuba played his entire Major League career with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1948-50 and 1952-55) and was a member of the club's 1955 World Championship club. An outfielder, almost one-third of his at bats during his career came as a pinch-hitter. In 1953 he appeared in 74 games, batting .254 with 5 home runs, 23 RBI. He retired after the 1955 season with 24 home runs, 125 RBI, and a .259 lifetime average. Despite those modest numbers, he was later immortalized in Roger Kahn's book "The Boys of Summer," which was published in 1972.
