Nice piece from early British boxing. Gus Platts was a champion British middleweight boxer. Hand-colored B&W photograph. At base of photograph is a notation stating that Platts was "European and English Middle-Weight Champion" and also was a "Winner of nearly 200 fights." Nice bonus is that the piece includes his Ogden Cigarettes strip card. Platts was such a dedicated pugilist that in 1915, while a private in the British Army, he was arrested for being AWOL in order to fight against Sergeant McCusker. After his boxing days, Platts became a wrestler, a promoter and even a referee. One can see Platt's manly chin jutting forth in the photo, but the prominent jaw was not merely aesthetic. In an amazing testament to his iron chin, in a career of over 200 fights, Platts was never knocked out! Coloration is so effective that the photo looks as if it's a watercolor. Framed 24.5x29.5".
