Displayed is a trio of Johnny Pesky coach's worn jerseys: Two Red Sox shirts and one jersey from the Portland Sea Dogs, a minor league affiliate of the Red Sox. Johnny Pesky, known as "the Needle" and "Mr. Red Sox," was with the Boston Red Sox organization in some way for 63 of his 71 years in baseball. Pesky, a shortstop and third baseman, played with the Red Sox in 1942. After military service during World War II, Pesky came back to play for the Red Sox from 1946-52. He was with the Detroit Tigers from 1952-54, and on the Washington Senators in '54. A left-handed batter, he was a contact hitter who led the AL in base hits in '42, and '46-47. He served the Red Sox as a broadcaster, minor league manager, Major League coach, and as a special instructor. The right field foul pole at Fenway Park is called "the Pesky Pole" for a home run Pesky hit in 1952, a shot that curved around the close foul pole (302'). Pesky batted a career .307. The three Pesky worn jerseys: 1) The gray jersey has BOSTON across the chest in sewn-on red letters with navy blue trim. Six silver-gray buttons run down the front. On the right sleeve is a navy blue Rawlings logo. On the left, outside tail is a Rawlings manufacturer's tag, showing size 44. Adjacent to the manufacturer's tag is a tag reading SET 1 1991. On back is PESKY in sewn-on red block letters with navy blue trim. Under the player's name is 6 in a sewn-on red numeral with navy blue trim. Pesky neatly signed the jersey in blue ink on the left chest. The jersey shows nice wear, with a few small stains on the front, but overall, it remains in nice condition. 2) A navy blue knit jersey is a practice jersey. On the left chest is the Red Sox logo. On the right sleeve is a sewn-on Majestic manufacturer's patch, and a sewn-on Majestic patch is on the right pocket. In the collar is a sewn-on Majestic Diamond Collection manufacturer's tag and below that is "PESKY," hand-written in blue ink by an unknown hand. The front has a 4-inch working zipper. The back of the practice jersey has no lettering, numbering, tags, or patches. The are a few minor stains on the front, but overall, the jersey is in fine condition. 3) The white Portland Sea Dogs jersey has Sea Dogs in sewn-on red letters with navy blue trim. Six pearl white buttons go down the front. The left sleeve has a sewn-on Boston Red Sox patch and a sewn-on Russell Athletic manufacturer's tag. On the left, outer tail is a Russell Athletic/MLB Authentic tag. Under the manufacturer's tag is a tag reading 46 (size)/100% polyester. On back is a sewn-on white nameplate, with PESKY in sewn-on red letters with navy blue trim. Below the nameplate is "6", in a sewn-on red numeral with navy blue trim. The jersey has a stain of about 1.25" in diameter on the right chest, possibly from tobacco, coffee, or dirt, and a number of smaller stains, on the front and back, origin unknown. Aside from the stains demonstrating use, the jersey is in fine condition. It is not clear when Pesky wore the jersey, but it is most likely from his time when he was a roving instructor in the Red Sox system. The Pesky trio of jerseys comes with an additional item: A 2x10" clubhouse locker tag. The card stock locker tag has both the Boston Red Sox and the Portland Sea Dogs logos. In black, machine-printed letters and numerals, the tag reads, PESKY #6. The three Pesky worn jerseys, plus the locker name and number tag, make a great remembrance for Johnny Pesky, Mr. Red Sox.
