Mickey Mantle was only 24 years old in 1956, and the Hall of Fame center fielder had the peak season of his career. Displayed is the negative of an iconic photo that depicts the great switch-hitter posing with Hall of Fame New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel at Yankee Stadium as Stengel uses one hand to place the Triple Crown on Mantle's head and uses his other hand to hold up three fingers, signaling Mantle's triple triumph. The trio of bats that Mickey holds also convey Mantle's triple triumph as one bat is marked as ".353" for Mantle's American League-leading batting average, a second bat shows "52" for Mantle's home run crown, and a third bat has "130" displayed, for Mantle's AL RBI Championship. Mantle also was the AL MVP in '56 as the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. The negative measures 3.9x4.9". Mantle would go on to win two more AL MVP Awards, in '57 and '62. His race with teammate Roger Maris in 1961 to break Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60, when Mantle developed a hip abscess and hit "only" 54 home runs, caused his fame to rise even higher. Yet, in '56, Mantle also led the AL in Slugging (.705), OPS (1.164), and Total Bases (376), so this negative truly captures Mantle at his peak. The ever-colorful showmanship of Stengel, as he theatrically poses with Mantle, substantially adds to the negative's vintage charm. The negative comes in an original 4.3x5.2" envelope on which is printed, by an unknown hand, "Mantle & Casey/Triple Crown photo/1956. The aforementioned envelope is in a larger 5.2x7.2" envelope on which is typed, "Mickey Mantle - Tripe Crown Photo (this photo on back of book)" and "1956" in ink, printed by an unknown hand. The negative is in EXCELLENT condition.
