Steve Garvey, a 10-time All-Star, was a mainstay at first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1969-82). Displayed is a 1977-79 Steve Garvey Hillerich & Bradsby game used bat. Garvey played 18 seasons in the Major Leagues, playing 14 seasons with the Dodgers and finishing his career with four years with the San Diego Padres. An excellent fielder, he was awarded four Gold Gloves. As a hitter, he batted a lifetime .294, with 272 home runs and 1,308 RBIs. He still holds the National League record for consecutive games played, at 1,207, the fourth longest consecutive games streak in Major League history. He was the NL MVP in 1974. During the three-year time period in which, for some period of time, the bat was game used, Garvey was remarkably consistent in his effective hitting. In '77, he batted .297 and hit 33 homers, with 115 RBIs; in '78, Garvey hit .316, with 21 four-baggers and 113 RBIs; in '78, the first baseman batted .315, with 28 home runs and 110 RBIs. The presented bat is 34.75" in length, and it weighs 34.6 ounces. The bat is cracked at a spot between the handle and the barrel. A "6," his number, is handwritten on the knob and end in black marker, by an unknown hand. Etched on the barrel is "GENUINE C263 [model]/Steve Garvey [facsimile signature]/LOUISVILLE SLUGGER." The bat shows great use, with pine tar on the handle. The item makes a fine remembrance of the National League's all-time "Iron Man."
