Displayed is a ticket stub to the Lou Gehrig Memorial (and game) originally scheduled for July 4th, 1941, exactly two years after the Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day held at Yankee Stadium at which Gehrig made his farewell speech, including his iconic "I am the luckiest man on the face of this earth" statement. When Gehrig made his famous speech at the 1939 Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day, he was suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He passed away from the effects of the disease on June 2, 1941. As a result, a Memorial Game was scheduled for July 4, 1941, at Yankee Stadium, but the game was rained out, and the game and ceremonies were rescheduled for July 6, 1941, as part of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics. The Yankees swept the doubleheader, but the primary interest of the fans was in the Memorial Ceremonies for Gehrig, the "Iron Horse," who had set the seemingly impossible-to-break Major League record of 2,130 consecutive games. In 2021, Major League Baseball instituted an annual Lou Gehrig Day, held each year on June 2nd, as a method to raise funds for ALS research. Each Major League team participates, and all managers, players, and coaches wear special "Lou Gehrig Day" patches on their uniforms. In addition, red "4-ALS" wristbands are available to be worn by the players, and the line-up cards and bases have tributes to Gehrig. The offered ticket stub measures 2.5x3.3". In part, it reads, "LOU GEHRIG MEMORIAL/JULY 4th, 1941" and it includes a photo of Gehrig. The stub is for Field Box 52 and the price is $2.20. The ticket stub exhibits some slight toning at the edges because of the passage of time. The stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded as VG-EX 4.
