Displayed is a full MINT 9 PSA Pop 1, NONE HIGHER, ticket to the July 11, 1944, Major League All-Star Game held at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Because it was held during World War II, many potential All-Stars were in military service. The game was held at 9 p.m., most likely to allow shift workers working at defense plants to attend. A crowd of 29,589 saw the National League defeat the American League by a score of 7-1. The AL scored first when the New York Yankees' Hank Borowy singled in the top of the first to score the Cleveland Indians' Ken Keltner. The National League took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning on RBIs by the Cubs' Bill Nicholson, the Brooklyn Dodgers' Augie Galan, the St. Louis Cards' Walker Cooper, and the Dodgers' Dixie Walker. The NL opened its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the 7th on a 2-run double by the St. Louis Cards' Whitey Kurowski. The game's final run occurred in the bottom of the 8th inning on a fly ball by Cardinals' Stan Musial. Ted Hughes, of the Boston Red Sox, took the loss for the Junior Circuit and Ken Raffensberger, of the Philadelphia Phillies, had the win for the National League. The ticket measures 1.75x6". It reads, in part, "All Star Game/Forbes Field/TUES. JULY 11, 1941" and it is for a $2.40 Grand Stand General Admission. The ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded MINT 9. Any ticket to the '44 All-Star game is rare, and this offering, with its PSA POP at 1, NONE HIGHER, makes a terrific collectible for a wartime game whose receipts were used to supply baseball equipment for wartime service members.
